When staging a kitchen there are endless possibilities, for us it is about — simplicity and elegance.

This Lake Boone Trail home is on this years Showcase of Kitchens Tour  presented by the Raleigh Junior League. I love these chairs below especially with the nail-head trim. Divine! Every time I look at these photographs of this kitchen, I want to whip up a six course meal for my friends and family. This kitchen inspires me!

Current Projects: “The Club” at 12 Oaks in Holly Springs

Design Lines 12 Oaks Front Door

Molly recently joined the team over at 12 Oaksdevelopment out in Holly Springs; working with Chris Wallace and Jim Anderson from LandTech Receiver Services, which is an affiliate of LandTech Incorporated out of South Carolina, and David Mason. They immediately hit it off and Molly became a part of the team working hard to accomplish the impossible. Within three months selections were made, furniture was ordered for both the inside and outside spaces, art displayed and every outside greenery specially hand picked.

The reason for the hussle? The 7th Annual Holly Springs Economic Development Partners Event evening reception was at The Club at 12 Oaks.

This project was truly a team effort and fun at the same time!

The development was built around a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course. Currently, there are approximately 18 houses built along with the model home and The Club, which houses the golf shop, the grill and exercise room.

Current Projects: Before & After Photos of NBC 17 “My Carolina Today” Set Design

This project started with a huge amount of research to understand set designs.

We had never done one before!!

During this time everyone on the Design Lines team observed and took notes of television shows, talk shows and even news shows to gain knowledge and expertise in the set designs. What we found was really neat!

If you focus tonight on a couple of news shows, more often then not the anchors will be in front of a shade of blue. This is because no matter the skin tone, everyone looks good in front of  blue. However, traditionally this blue is not any ordinary blue, it is a bright cobalt blue.  Common themes we saw throughout our research on talk show sets is that they vary from living room scenes to high bar stool set-ups and even have a combination of both. A couple of examples we looked at were  Hoda & Kathy Lee, The View and Oprah.

So in the end, this is what we came up with. See the previous post or click on “My Carolina Today” category on the right to see Judy being interviewed by Sharon Delaney. There  you will hear the vision and our inspiration from Judy in her own words.

Below are a few photographs of the My Carolina Today set under construction.

Design Lines in Virginia

Exterior Finishes on VA house

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to visit one of our new construction projects in windy Blacksburg, Virginia.  Situated beautifully atop a mountain, the European manor style home feels more like a comfortable fortress.  The duties of the day included an electrical walk through with the electrician as well as finalizing the paint schedule with the client.  The most satisfying part of the day was seeing this door that Judy & I had designed: CAD Drawing of Doorcome to fruition in real life!

Did I mention the spectacular view?

Design Lines in New Hampshire

DLL-NewHampshire

While the majority of our work is done right here in North Carolina, we have completed projects far north as New Hampshire and as far south as Key Largo. This picture above is of the current project we are working on up in New Hampshire.

Oh and if we have any followers from New Hampshire, I would love to know! email us. We need some great recommendations in the area.

Raleigh Remodel: Before & After

Foyer Before & After

Over the summer, I had the chance to partner with Taylor Building & Development to remodel a house in Raleigh for a young artist and film-lover, Jeff.  The house, located inside the beltline, was built in the seventies and is situated beautifully in an untamed landscape that’s perfectly private.

On our to-do was a general update of the entire house–new hardwood floors throughout, an update on finishes, and swapping wallpaper for a fresh coat of paint.  We transformed both bathrooms with an emphasis on functionality, installing new countertops and appliances for the kitchen.   A few longterm changes also manifested, that will continue to enhance the house–like removing a closet and a platform in the foyer that didn’t work, and reconfiguring the Master Bathroom.

Spare Bedroom

The lighting became my favorite change. Before, the house was craving light–only getting it from slivers of existing windows.  We began by adding a pair of windows in the Master Bedroom.  Then much-needed recessed lighting was added, as well as updated decorative fixtures.  The transformation is quite remarkable. The whole house is illuminated, making the evenings especially pretty; and the new light fixtures suit the personality of both the house and the client, Jeff.

KitchenB&A

I asked Jeff a few questions about the project, his answers to my survey, below:

My style:

clean, simple lines & surfaces. comfortable, unfussy elegance.

Inspiration:

contemporary European with a dash of Asian design.

Favorite Element:

probably the kitchen. I didn’t like anything about the original kitchen and now I love everything. Changing other bits made an existing element like the white cabinets much more beautiful and appealing whereas I never really liked them before. Like every other room now, the kitchen has it’s own unique vibe but integrates perfectly with the rest of the house.

What Friends Say:

Wow! It doesn’t look or feel like the same house.

Biggest Indulgence:

Master Bath. The most extreme transformation, we spent the a lot of time discussing the smallest space, and in the end, every element, from frosted pocket door, to custom vanity, to frame-less shower, came out beautiful and striking.

Best advice:

Trust the process and your designer. A remodel can stressful and there are lots of decisions and deadlines but try to have fun and enjoy each step.

Next week I’ll share my interview with Rob Taylor of Taylor Building & Development.  Don’t miss out on his tips for remodeling!

“This Olde Farmhouse” Part II

The farmhouse project is well under way! It is amazing that such a small project can turn into such an amazing amount of history.

Here is a snap shot of the job site, though there is so much more to this land. You are never alone when you drive up to the site.

What do I mean? There are days that the construction is quiet, but what is amazing are the deer that run freely through the property.

When I drove up this day there were three deer just playing in the driveway. Two ran off, but I got a picture of one. I am going to start naming them. It is pretty amazing!

Sitting right in front of the half-torn-down, half-being-built-back-up farmhouse is a piece of history. It is nice to be reminded of what was and what is to come.

This is the stack of wood that was removed from the house during demolition. It is all going back in some sort of way. We intend on making the kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom cabinets from the wood. Also the existing hardwoods will go back down.

This is a view looking into the master bedroom. It is hard to make out right now, but soon it will be a cozy little bedroom with a screen porch off the back.

This is a view looking into the bathroom. Soon you will see a full frameless glass shower enclosure, with a decorative cabinet, and amazing tile!

These are the colors we are thinking about for the exterior. We want to go with a light grey tone for the entire house which will play nice with the brick red metal roof. All the old shutters and front door will go the darker grey tone.

A sneak peek inside the house:

Tile from Walker Zanger will help take the house back to its original time. This tile is from the Contessa collection which is a hand-painted tile. It will be accented in the bathroom and in the kitchen.

This is a shot from the local showroom, Byrd Tile, that we specify Walker Zanger tile from. This is a snap shot of the kitchen back splash. It will be accented by a rough natural wood cabinet.

Here is a sneak peak at the marble we are using for the kitchen and the bathroom – Vermont Imperial Marble. Laura, from Rockin’teriors, one of our amazing fabricators, found it for us.

Recent Projects: Harrison’s Room

Four-Year-Old Harrison’s parents wanted to transform his lime-green nursery: (before)

… into a guest friendly big-boy room he could grow up in: (after)

The finished room is a mix of his parent’s style, traditional preppy & classically Raleigh, coupled with Harrison’s interests (think all things boy- deer, dogs, & dinosaurs).

His favorite book, Caps for Sale, was purchased for $8 at Borders and turned into artwork by framing the illustrations in Pottery Barn frames.

My favorite element in the room is the white metal antler plaque, purchased from Urban Outfitters on the cheap. Placed above the owner’s existing chest (I found it in the attic), the antlers make it playful,as the shape of the Chippendale handles mimics the antlers above.

The fabrics-in schemes of white, stone, a deep denim blue & Carolina blue are handsome enough for the room to function as a guest suite, too.

The dinosaur skeleton illustration above the desk is from 20×200.com,and sets off perfectly his collection of rubber snakes-displayed as a curious collection in a leather tray.

The airplane artwork on the bedroom door is by Harrison himself.
