Design Lines Community Involvement with The Green Chair Project

After Hilaire and Caitlin first toured the Green Chair facility a few weeks ago they thought it would be a great idea  to bring the rest of Design Lines team along for a “Lunch and Learn.” On July 11th the team toured the facility, talked with Beth and Jackie, the creators of this amazing program, and enjoyed a Jersey Mikes lunch.

A Closer Look: Jasper Johns

Just in time for the 4th of July weekend, I want to introduce you to an artist with southern roots that everyone should get to know.  Jasper Johns is an artist who was born in Georgia, raised in South Carolina, and rose to fame as one of the most important American Painters of the 20th century.  Take a look at one of his most famous works: Flag from 1954.

With Jasper Johns, things are not always as they seem.  He used the flag in order to comment on flatness in modern painting, and used dense brushwork to imitate the strokes of Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock, although in a controlled and deliberate manner.  Here’s a closer look at the above painting, which shows his use of encaustic (wax mixed with pigment):

It has also been suggested that the flag is a sort of autobiographical reference, referring to Johns’ time in the military, or the Revolutionary war hero after which he was named.

Johns’ breakthrough move was to adopt popular iconography in painting, paving the way for pop artists like Andy Warhol.

Take a closer look at Jasper Johns’ work and see what it means to you…

Have a Happy 4th!

A Closer Look: NYC Favorites Part 2

There are so many things to do in New York in the summer that it’s hard to pick favorites.  Here’s a list of some things you definitely won’t want to miss:

1. Public Art.  There’s no better place to see public art than in New York City.  But see as much of it as you can, because many of the public sculptures are changed-out regularly.  Below are some of my favorites from this summer (clockwise from upper left: Jaume Plensa’s Echo in Madison Square Park, Egyptian Temple of Dendur permanently installed at the Metropolitan Museum, various sculptures by Sol Lewitt in City Hall Park, Robert Pruitt’s Andy Monument near Union Square).

 2. Window Displays at Bergdorf Goodman   I thought the old days of glamorous hand-made window displays were over… until I passed Bergdorf Goodman on 5th avenue.

3.  Chickpea and the La Maison du Macaron are two of the best places to get a quick snack.  Chickpea, with several locations throughout the city, is known for baking instead of frying it’s falafel- a delicious and healthy alternative. But save room for Desset at La Maison du Macaron (where I learned that Macarons are not Macaroons).  You can get these delicious Frrench treats made with egg whites, sugar and almond powder in almost any flavor imaginable.  My favorite is the Rose variety, beautifully decorated with flecks of gold leaf.

Happy travels!

Robert

A Closer Look: NYC Favorites Part 1

As I was reminded during a recent trip, New York is always abuzz with things to do and see.  If you’re planning to visit sometime this summer, here are some of the best things going on right now:

1. Alexander McQueen’s posthumus Exhibition “Savage Beauty” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This is a must-see for anyone who loves design or fashion.  Make sure you get there before 10am to avoid the crowds, because it’s no secret that this is the best show in New York right now.

2. The Morgan Library:  Located in Mid-town Manhattan, this old favorite is a complex of buildings that orginated as the private collection of entrepreneur Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913) and has expanded to include the architecture of Renzo Piano.  Highlights on display now include an original score by Mozart and an enviable collection of famous journals – from the likes of Bob Dylan, John Steinbeck, and Tennessee Williams.

3. Eataly.  There are tons of places to eat in New York, but few are as unique and fun as Eatly, a 50,000 square foot complex owned by famous chefs Mario Bertoli and Lidia Matticchio.  You can grab a bite to eat, drink a glass of wine, or browse the market for fresh produce, meats, and imported italian products.  It’s like a visit to an Italian village, and the food is just as spectacular.

Stay tuned for the rest of the list next week!

A Closer Look: Isa Genzken

Isa Genzken is a German artist who combines the bric-a-brac of everyday life to create unusual sculptures that shock and amaze.  Sometimes her work looks more like a pile of garbage than a sculpture.    But take a closer look, and you’ll see poetic arrangements of  color and texture balancing in space.  Her work has been aptly described as “contemporary ruins.”  Take a closer look:

Genzken’s work seems to warn us against taking ourselves too seriously, combining carefully-composed arrangements with a playful sense of humor.  Through this process, she creates inventive works that never cease to surprise me, and that’s why she’s one of my favorite artists.

A Closer Look: A Walking Tour of Philadelphia

While in Philadelphia for Light Fair International, Judy and I took a quick walking tour of Center City.  It’s amazing how many beautiful examples of architecture can be found just steps from the Convention Center located at 13th and Market.  You can do the whole circuit in about a half hour.

We began by walking west from the convention center to Broad Street, where we caught a glimpse of two of Philly’s most handsome buildings – the Masonic Temple (left) and City Hall (right).  Completed in 1901, City Hall is an excellent example of the Second Empire style.  It was Philadelphia’s tallest building until 1987, and it is still the tallest and largest all-masonry building in the world.

We also walked by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art building, designed by Frank Furness.  Built in the Vicotrian Gothic style, this building is a masteripiece of architectural ornament.

We also saw saw great examples of public artwork very close to City Hall, including impressive sculptures by Claes Oldenburg and Jacques Lipchitz.  The nearby Fabric Workshop and Museum houses cutting-edge contemporary art shows and is also worth a visit.

Our final stop was the PSFS building (now the Loews Hotel), built in 1932.  It is said to be the world’s first skycraper built in the International Style of Modernism.  Filled with fine examples of marble from around the world, Judy and I marveled at it’s beautiful interiors.  But one of the building’s custom Cartier clocks told us it was lunch time, so we descended to the first floor and ate lunch at the hotel’s restaurant – Sole Food.

Finally, we headed back to the Convention Center, which itself is an architectural landmark.  Originally the Reading Terminal Train Station, the building also houses many restaurants and food markets on the first floor.  It’s a great place to grab a quick lunch.

A Closer Look: 30 Americans

The North Carolina Museum of Art is a fantastic museum.  I’ve already written about the new wing and what a perfect place it is for art.  But through September, you’ll find some of the best surprises in the old wing, as part of the show 30 Americans.  The 75 works in this show were pulled from the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and represent a sampling of some of the best American Art from the past 4 decades.  All of the artists in the show are African American, and their work often addresses issues of identity and race.  There are so many beautiful and interesting pieces, that it’s hard to choose favorites – but I’ll try:  Highlights for me included the following works by Wangechi Mutu, Kerry James Marshall, Shinique Smith, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

(above: Wangechi Mutu, Non Je Ne Regrette Rien)

(above: Kerry James Marshall, Souvenir: Composition in Three Parts)

(above: Shinique Smith, A Bull, A Rose, A Tempest

(above: Jean Michel-Basquiat, Untitled Self Portrait)

I hope you’ll head to the NCMA to see this show – it’s definitely worth the trip.  30 Americans runs through September 4th – more info at http://www.ncartmuseum.org/

Light Fair 2011: All about LEDs

When Judy and I visited Light Fair International this year, one thing was immediately obvious – the future of lighting is LED technology.  In fact, more than 90% of the new products we saw used some sort of LED as a light source.

So what exactly is an LED?  And what are the advantages/disadvantages of using them?  I’ll answer these questions so that you can feel comfortable about bringing LED technology into your life.  It’s just a matter of time before we see them everywhere!

What is an LED?

LED stands for “light emitting diode.”  It is a semiconductor light source that has been used since 1962 as indicator lights in many devices.   Recent advances in technology have increased the color range and brightness of LEDs, so that they are now widely used in all types of lighting – from street lamps to desk lamps.

Advantages of LEDs

LEDs have two main advantages – they are extremely energy efficient, and they have a very long life.  It only takes about 13Watts to power an LED with the light output of a 100Watt Incandescent!  And they have a life span of 50,000-100,000 hours.   These attributes make LEDs a favorite among green designers.

LEDs can be very compact and give off little heat.  This allows them to be used in places where traditional light sources would not work.  Flexible LED strips are available that are paper thin and can be placed in almost any location – including outdoors.

Disadvantages (and things to watch out for)

Despite advances in technology, many LEDs are known to have inconsistent light color output.  This means that two “identical” LED fixtures placed side-by-side could give off different colors of light.  Usually, the differences are small.   But in some cases the differences can be noticeable and ugly.  The only way to be sure is to order samples or see the products in person before you buy.

LEDs can also be prone to “flicker,” a phenomenon where the diode turns on and off in rapid succession.  Flicker can lead to all sorts of problems – hyperactivity or distraction in children, migraines, and even epileptic seizures.  In most cases, flicker can be avoided by choosing a better ballast for your light fixture.  As with fluorescent lights, electronic ballasts are usually better than magnetic ballasts.

LEDs are typically more expensive than older lighting technologies.  But their increased efficiency means that they will “pay for themselves” in the form of reduced electricity bills.

There’s no avoiding LEDs – they are quickly becoming the future of lighting.  I hope these tips will make the transition easier for you!

Blogfest 2011: Inside Look at the Kravet & Lee Jofa NYC Offices

Next stop on the Blogfest agenda – touring the Kravet and Lee Jofa offices in NYC and boy was it fun!! I now have a deeper understanding of how they work and their departments within the company.

(Above left) Jennifer Powell of Kravet striking a pose at her desk. The space is so organized and clean! I wonder how they do it ?! (Above right) Various fabrics displayed for the marketing department.

(Above) Design concepts for several Kravet showrooms across the country and Canada.

(Above) The Kravet hallways. Look at all that storage, my I wish our fabric filing at Design Lines looked this good!

Fabrics, fabrics, fabrics, and more fabrics!

(Above) The CAD Room where staff members work on fabric coloring. It is a must, to have big printers.

(Above) Kravet also does custom fabric requests for various projects. The one above, is for Disney.

(Above) Lilly Pultizer fabrics by Lee Jofa. I love all the pop of color. Did you know, within every Lilly pattern you will find her name? Oftentimes, it is hidden but you can see  in the lower left picture.

While technology plays an important  part in fabric coloring today, sometimes matching fabric color by paint is the best way to go. (illustrated above lower right.)

(Above left) A Lee Jofa employee who has been with the company for over 40 years – he was so passionate about all the fabrics and was extremely knowledgeable.
