Hickory Chair University

Judy, Molly, Stephanie, Ashley, Lauren and I are off to Hickory, North Carolina this afternoon for a short excursion to tour the upholstery & case good factory of furniture manufacturer Hickory Chair . All of their products are beautiful, with collections from designers Alexa Hampton, Thomas O’Brien, & Suzanne Kasler.

We’ll be back on Wednesday evening to write about our experience (with pictures, too). Until then, feel free to salivate over these gorgeous images from their look book.

Local Design: RDU Terminal 2

I had the pleasure of fetching two friends from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport over the holiday and was excited to see the architecture of newly completed Terminal 2.
Descending from level one to baggage claim, I fell in love with Lydia Rubio’s aluminum & steel tree sculpture. The sculpture’s trunk is firmly mounted outside the airport, with its branches continuing inside the terminal. I liked it so much that I went back the second time with my camera. Read more about it here , or even better, check it out live.
What are your thoughts about RDU Terminal 2?

Happy New Year!

Christmas Traditions

The Christmas spirit is in the air at Design Lines! We just got back from our yearly Christmas lunch and quickly jumped into the boxes of holiday goodies we graciously recieved from all the wonderful reps this year.

Whether it’s driving around the neighborhood seeing every house lit up with lights, making reindeer food with the kids or grandma’s cookies from scratch, decorating the staircase with fresh green garland and red bows, to attending Christmas eve service at church the ladies at Design Lines are blessed this Christmas.

Our hope this Christmas is that your home is safe and warm wherever you spend the holidays.

Below is a picture of Lauren’s Christmas tradition of baking her great grandmother’s French cookies and recipe. Yummy!

French Cookies – my great grandmother’s recipe

3 cups of flour
3 sticks of butter
3 egg yolks
1 cup of sugar

Strawberry preserves, Polander real mint jelly, MacKay’s lemon curd, pecans, etc

Soften the butter.
Mix with egg yolks; stir.
Mix in sugar; stir.
Mix in flour last; stir until it is moist and even.
Roll dough into 1” balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Using your pinky finger, poke halfway into each dough ball, creating a well.
Fill the well with a small amount of desired topping.
Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes.
Let cool and enjoy!

Save the Watts for the holidays

This morning Hilaire & I attended a fabulous Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Meeting. A conversation regarding a balanced approach to energy was led by our new friend & Progress Energy Community Relations Manager, Marty Clayton.
We already strive to implement & specify only responsible lighting systems & appliances in the new construction projects we have. But the discussion was insightful & got us at Design Lines really thinking about what we could do to use energy in a more responsible way everyday. We learned some valuable lessons this morning & though we can’t share with you the Compact Florescent Light Bulbs Marty gifted to us (thank you Progress Energy) we’d like to share a few of the major points Marty shared with us & some other Chamber members.
1- The easiest rule of energy conversation really is simple & responsible:
Don’t need it? Turn it off.
2- Why don’t we all consider researching/looking at Senate Bill #3 ?
3- Savethewatts.com by Progress Energy really is an education in simple energy saving tips. For instance:
“Unplug your home office when not in use! In the average home, 75 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off but still plugged into the wall. “
I know when I leave for my Illinois home next week I will be turning the thermostat down to 60 degrees & will turn off my water heater.

How will you save energy for the holidays and the New Year?

Orange you glad I posted this paint color transformation?

Our clients & friends, the Cummings family, recently painted their dining room a delectable orange color from Benjamin Moore after the installation of some lovely wallpaper we specified from Schumacher. I thought I’d share some before & after photos of the exciting process.

Before

After-Voila!

For those of you last minute shoppers out there- consider a paint consultation from Design Lines as a gift for your loved one. A paint color can change your space dramatically & breathe new life for the New Year into your home or office.

Please comment on this post…I’m anxious to hear your thoughts on their
beautifully transformed space. Simply click on the blog’s title or the pencil
below & post comments.

P.S Special thanks to the Cummings
for allowing me to post these images, I especially adore the wreath hanging in
the chandelier above the table.

Molly’s Find: Lighting!

Designer Molly Simmons is always finding beautiful items to place in her client’s homes. A few days ago the following page from the Anthropologie catalog was open on the Design Lines Lunch Table:

Wouldn’t this lamp in ivory porcelain look fantastic on a buffet in a kitchen or a dining room? We love the bit of whimsy it could add to a formal asethetic.

These cloisonne lamps are also very beautiful and could add some color & pattern to a mostly neutral space.

I hope to showcase more of Molly’s finds in a bi-monthly blog series. Be on the lookout for more items spotted by Molly.

Local Designers Help Interact

As a part of the Carolinas Chapter of ASID community event, Design Lines volunteered with other area designers in Raleigh at Interact a private non-profit United Way agency. We were able to organize some of the donated gifts for their Holiday Bazaar on December 10th. These holiday gifts will go to women, children and families who have been victims and survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault.

Mum’s the word

I recently specified this fabric from Harlequin for a guest room. While most of the room is neutral, this fabric will be used as accent pillows on the bed. The combination of the large scale print and the bold background color will throw an impactful punch into the space, just as it does in this photo from Harlequin’s website.

Or, if you’d like to wear your mums on the floor, check out these rugs from Madeline Weinrib.

Website of the weekend: Designers Guild

Here’s a little color (or shall I say colour?) inspiration for your weekend. I was perusing the Designers Guild website for some fabric and came upon their paint products. The hues were remarkable and decidedly European in their saturation levels.

From the website:

“The Designers Guild paint range of 98 exciting paint colours reflects a fresh and dynamic approach to modern living. The paint is of superb quality and offers enormous coverage.”
I am especially drawn to their collection of pinks & fuschias- they are beautifully vibrant & unusual. My favorite part of the website was comparing the paint colors- this tool allows you to create schemes very easily. See mine in the screen capture below:
Be sure to check out their website to see a diverse collection of inspired fabrics and schemes. I love the image below:
